St. Cuthbert's Mothers’ Union

MOTHERS’ UNION was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner.  Currently Mothers’ Union has over 4 million members in over 80 countries. Membership is open to anyone, male or female, single or married, providing you have been baptised as a Christian and support the aims of the MU. St. Cuthbert Darwen branch of the Mothers’ Union was formed in 1928.  Currently we have 42 members.

We meet twice monthly apart from the summer months-July and August.  Our Evening meeting is on the second Monday in the month at 7.30pm.  Our Afternoon meeting is on the third Tuesday in the month at 2pm. We have a wide and varied programme-this includes speakers and meals out.  We pay an annual subscription and also £1.00 per meeting, which helps pay speaker costs but does include tea and cake!

As well as our own branch meetings we are involved in events within Blackburn and Darwen Deanery and also Blackburn Diocesan MU events. Having regular fund raising events, such as coffee mornings, enables us to make regular donations to MU charities, such as the “Away From It All” scheme which provides holidays for people who would not otherwise be able to manage a break.  Blackburn Diocese owns a static caravan at Morecambe and our branch has on several occasions arranged holidays for local families who could not otherwise have afforded one.

Another of our activities is to collect toiletry items which we make up into Emergency Toilet Bags for the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Mothers’ Union Prayer

Loving Lord

We thank you for your love so freely given to us all.

We pray for families around the world.

Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union

As we seek to share your love

Through the encouragement, strengthening

And support of marriage and family life.

Empowered by your Spirit,

May we be united in prayer and worship,

And in love and service reach out as your hands across the world.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen
